🪔 #OnThisDay in 497 BC Romans won a victory at Lake Regillus. According to the legend, two Dioscuri - Castor and Pollux - appeared on the battlefield as two horsemen; and after the battle a temple - in the middle of the photo - was built in their honor on the Roman Forum. 📸 me

🪔 For eyes pleasure: these two gold appliques represent Bacchus and Silenus. Produced in Roman Syria in the 3rd c. AD, they are designed to be sewn onto a garment, to evoke nocturnal festivities in honor of Bacchus and mystery cults. Now in BnF, Paris. 📸 me

🪔 For Eyes pleasure: This wonderful bust of a wealthy charioteer was found – together with 6 others - in a sanctuary of Hercules in Rome. Charioteers dedicated their portraits to Hercules to thank the god for their victories. Now in the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme, Rome. 📸 me

🪔 For #FrescoFriday: These frescoes come from the domus of Vigna Guidi, a luxurious house in Rome dating from the late Hadrianian period. It was partly destroyed and covered with earth during the construction of the Baths of Caracalla in 212 AD. 📸 me

🪔 Just for eyes pleasure: This black bowl depicting a hunter and his dog was probably made in Etruria about 300-280 BC. It is unusual because, unlike the usual pottery decoration, it was painted in added colour with shadows and depth. Now in the BM. 📸 me
